Full Itinerary
Day 1 – Basra
- Arrive in Basra and check in at Shamas Al Basra 4-star hotel
- Optional activities: walk by Shat Al Arab port, boat ride, visit the Italian bridge
Day 2 / Basra to Nassryiah (Marshes/Chibayesh)
- Drive to Nassryiah, stopping at Al Qurna to visit the "tree of knowledge"
- Continue to the Marshlands for a traditional lunch and boat ride
- Overnight at a reed house or local hotel
Day 3 / Nassryiah to Najaf
- Visit the Ziggurat of Ur, have lunch en route to Samawa
- Explore Uruk's ancient temples, drive to Najaf, and visit the Shrine of Ali ibn Abi Talib
- Overnight in Najaf
Day 4 / Najaf to Karbala
- Visit Wadi Al Salam Cemetery and Dhu al-Kifl
- Explore the ancient city of Babylon and its landmarks
- Drive to Karbala, visit the shrines of Imam Hussein and Abbas
- Overnight in Karbala
Day 5 / Karbala to Baghdad
- Tour historical sites in Baghdad including Bab al-Wastani, Abbasid Palace, and Mustansiriya Madrasa
- Walk through Sarai Street, have tea at Shabandar Tea House, and visit Mutanabi Street
- Tour Iraq Museum and other landmarks
- Overnight in Baghdad
Day 6 / Baghdad to Samara to Mosul
- Visit the Grand Mosque of Samarra and the Abu Dalaf Mosque
- Drive to Mosul, staying at Modern Palace hotel
Day 7 / Mosul to Erbil
- Explore Mosul's old bazaar, cultural houses, and Al-Masfi Mosque
- Visit Baytuna Cultural Museum and ancient sites
- Drive to Erbil, tour the Citadel, and stay overnight
Day 8 / Erbil to Duhok
- Visit historical sites including Gaugamela and St. Matthew's Monastery
- Explore holy Lalish and arrive in Duhok
Day 9 / Duhok to Alqoush and back
- Tour ruins near Gara Mountain and visit Alqosh's tomb of Prophet Nahum
- Explore Zoroastrian sites and possibly Khanis or Halamata Reliefs
- Overnight in Duhok
Day 10 / Duhok to Amedi
- Visit Amadiya's ancient fortress city and natural sites
- Overnight in Pel house motel
Day 11 / Amedi to Sulaymaniyah
- Pass Shanidar Cave, hike Barzan or Rawanduz Gorge
- Travel to Sulaymaniyah with optional stop in Dokan
- Overnight in Sulaymaniyah
Day 12 / Sulaymaniyah
- Visit archeological museum, Red House, and Halabja Memorial
- Explore Ahmed Awa waterfall and village
- Return to Sulaymaniyah for overnight stay
Day 13 / Sulaymaniyah to Erbil
- Visit Zarzi Cave, Koi Sinjaq, and have lunch near Lake Dokan
- Arrive in Erbil for departure
